Penn Jazz was formed in 1973.
There have been many jazz groups
at the University of Pennsylvania, but the first official jazz big band
was part of the Penn Band. Soon after the dissolution of that band,
Penn Jazz was formed.
Penn Jazz is the premiere big band of the University of Pennsylvania. We are entirely student-run & led with the assistance of musical director Dan Paul. We play performances for the community of Philadelphia, for entertainment as well as education.
We hope to continue to perform with legends such as Dizzy Gillespie, the Count Basie Orchestra, Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, & Christian McBride. We aim to emulate both contemporary & historical jazz musicians & serve our community.
